CIFECENTER FOR INTEGRATED FACILITY ENGINEERING Trust in Context: The Development of Interpersonal Trust in Geographically Distributed Work Teams
نویسندگان
چکیده
Increased competition, globalization, and greater availability of communication technologies have lead to an increase in the number of geographically distributed teams. The distribution of these teams creates new contexts for team members that may make trust simultaneously more difficult and more important. In this chapter, we used data from 108 dyads on 12 globally distributed student project teams to compare the development of trust in collocated and distributed dyads. We find evidence that trust is more stable in distributed dyads – it increases less, but it also decreases less than in collocated dyads. Members of distributed dyads appear to retain stable perceptions of their team members’ trustworthiness that, in turn, affect their perceptions of their team members’ performance. In contrast, collocated dyads appear to update their perceptions of trustworthiness based on their perceptions of their team members’ performance. We conclude that the context in which people are working may have a significant impact on the way that trust is developed.

Interpersonal trust in cross-functional, geographically distributed work: A longitudinal study
With increasing globalization and the proliferation of communication technologies, more people are working in cross-functional, geographically distributed teams. Although trust is clearly an important ingredient in these collaborations, little is known about the challenges this new work and social environment creates for the development of trust. Different disciplinary perspectives, different r...

Knowledge management is a process that has been recently generated as an activity which is very important in the dynamic environment, and in the competitive scene. We believe that KM is a process which its organizational knowledge is created from the individual knowledge of the members of the organization. The relevant studies have indicated that organizing based on work teams could be consider...

The interactions among peers in Peer-to-Peer systems as a distributed collaborative system are based on asynchronous and unreliable communications. Trust is an essential and facilitating component in these interactions specially in such uncertain environments. Various attacks are possible due to large-scale nature and openness of these systems that affects the trust. Peers has not enough inform...
متن کاملThe Role Of Motivational Factors In Distributed Software Development Teams: An Empirical Investigation
Distributed teams are found extensively in today’s globalized software development industry. Collaboration in such teams is based mostly on electronic communication. The limitations in terms of feedback and interaction in general, as well as aspects such as the isolation of team members or subgroups, have the potential to create motivational challenges and can therefore affect team performance....
